Panrutti village in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu has a population of about 80,000. State Bank has two branch offices in the village.
A few days ago, a customer in a branch office asked the branch manager about the new branch. ‘You never told me about the third branch of the bank?’ The branch manager was shocked by the customer's question. He said that SBI has only two branches in this area.
The branch manager was shocked when the customer showed the documents of the third branch. He inquired about it at the regional office. But when the regional office stated that no branch had been opened, they went to see the so-called third branch.
When they reached there, the bank employees were shocked. The decoration of the office, the physical infrastructure and all the arrangements were like that of a bank. There were cash deposit vouchers, rubber stamps, bank name printed on the file and cash counting machine at the cash counter.
Based on the complaint of the real branch of the State Bank, the police have raided and arrested three people involved in opening a fake branch. Together, they opened a fake branch of the bank last April.
Kamal, 19, who is believed to be planning to open a fake branch, has said that he has been watching the banking business since he was a childhood as his parents are employed in the bank. He said that he opened the bank after his father died and his mother retired from the bank.
He told the police that he did this not because of fraud but because of his desire to open a bank.
An investigation is underway into how many deposits they collected in three months, what the current amount is, and how many people have been defrauded.
